When you work for a company you need to follow their regulations, the regulations could be things like, working in their style or using only a certain color pallet, everything you illustrate has to go through the higher ups at the company, being restricted to the work you will want to create and you will have a percentage taken away from you.
People get mixed up with industries and agencies and from what ive seen through my lectures is that in industries you have to work for the industry and take the work that they give to you and it overall gives you a lot less freedom, were in a agency its just a collective of free lance illustrators who pay the agency for advertisement basically but the illustrators still find their work and can choose what work they want to do for the agencies.
http://www.beehiveillustration.co.uk/ This is a link to a industry of children book illustrators. What I see from the layout of the web page is how the theme they have used works well with all of the illustrators work and the colors that are used in the layout of the webpage, the colors achieve a bright vibrant setting that is considered appealing to children.
In one of the lectures at uni we got shown a industry that really stud out to me, ILoveDust, http://ilovedust.com/work/welcome-to-the-jungle
What i like about this company is how each illustrator stands out from the rest with either their bold lining or their limited but vibrant colors, they work that i mainly like from this industry is the more cartoony but realistic stuff.
This piece is called " 10 Years In The Game ", this piece is a screen print for their 10 year aniversery.
Going into a industry is just one of the many ways that you can advertise your self, freelance, collaborations and exhibitions are they other most known ways to advertise your self and making contacts.
Freelancing is were you find your own contracts and you can either work in your studio or at home without anyone telling you what to do, freelancing is the most common and beneficial choice of illustrators because they get to choose the work they want to create and they dont take any pay cuts from a industry, also if you are a free lance illustrator you can choose your own style and colors that you want to incorporate into a piece were if you worked in a industry you might be restricted from doing so because they might have a certain color pallet that you must use.
Here are some of my favourite free lance illustrators.
http://www.dan-mumford.com/ , Dan Mumford is one of my favourite illustrators because through his work he clearly expresses his love for horror and scifi and he has managed to incorporate his hobbys into his work through the line work and colors that he has used. With Dan being a free lance illustrator he could look for his own work and he could choose whether he wanted to do it or not so he was able to choose what work suited him the most and appealed to him, if Dan had worked in a industry he might not of been able to express him self through his work as he has been doing for the past few years.
When you do freelance work you need to find your own ways to get your name noticed and to build up your client list, the best way to do that is through networking, such as exhibitions, creative and original c.vs, social media sites. The most common way people find a job is through c.vs, most people create c.vs that just contain text and start with dear sir / madam, or along them lines, but when it comes to illustration the more creative and original the c.v design the better your chances are in getting work from the companies you send them to.
Exhibitions are good places to show off your work and to meet potential clients and build your contact base up. Exhibitions are one of the best ways to get your work noticed by some of the biggest names in illustration and some large companies that will need illustration work doing for them.
Social media sites can be much more then just talking to your friends, Facebook has the biggest fan base in the world for social media sites, so if you put your work onto them and millions of people can see them and share them with all of their friends and followers, but if you do upload them to a social networking site make sure that its all for work so it looks professional.

Professional Studies ( Agencies )
their are 2 different types of agencies for illustration, in one of the agency styles you could work under the company's brand and have to follow the industry's style, whether its color, text or positioning, were if you worked freelance under the agency name you will be advertised by the agencies, be offered work from people who go to the agency and you will be able to work in your own style.
I cant personally see my self being a part of a company or a agency, because i wouldn't really want to have a percentage of my pay taken away from me even if i do work from what i have found my self without the help of the agency, but if i was to work for a agency i would want it to give me a large amount of freedom for my work.
http://www.folioart.co.uk/illustration/folio/agency
Thats a link to a agency that if i was going to work for a agency id like to work for one that is like that. The agency known as folio mainly contains illustrators who mainly go down the route of cartoon like illustration instead of creating realism, i am not saying that realism isn't a part of the agency but if you look their is more illustrations in a cartoon style then their is in realism, so this agency looks like it is aimed more at appealing to children then it is adults.
http://www.folioart.co.uk/illustration/folio/artists/illustrator/gabriel-corbera
One of the artists that works for the agency is, Gabriel Corbera. Her work focuses on more childrens books, comics and cartoons then it does for stuff such as advertisement, one thing that i have picked up on is that she works in a style that almost makes all of her characters look like clowns or part of a circus from the shape of the face and the colors used in the nose.
When you want to be a part of a agencie you will need to find ways on how to represent your self and your style so it helps you stand out and the agencies will give you some commisions where if your work wasn't to noticeable they would give you a smaller percentage of work while someone else gets more, but when you do get your work noticed you have another herdel to over come, that is what type of illustrator do you want to be known as?, whether its illustrations for sci-fi, horror, kids books, how fast you can create the illustration or how much detail in the development is needed, so when you enter a agencie you need to have most of these things figured out so you could survive in the agencie.

Professional Studies ( Publishing )
The publishing industry is bigger then all movie, music and other entertainment industrys in england, so this factor shows that book, magazine, novel and even comic book illustrations are the most common jobs because their is so much materiel that is out their to be recreated or still needs its own original image.
http://www.penguin.co.uk
http://www.penguin.com
Penguin is one of the biggest publishing companys in the world, Penguin publishing first appeared on the scene in 1935 from its creator Allen Lane, the meaning behind the penguin as the symbol is said on its web page, " He also wanted a ' dignified but flippant ' symbol for his business.", he then got a illustrator to go into a zoo and then create some sketches of a penguin and that is how the symbol came to be. Back when penguin first started out the book categories were all organised with the colour of the front cover, orange for fiction, blue for biography and green for crime and with what they did to the industry complete created something new and original to the publishing industry and still to this day they are creating beautiful books. Penguins origins are in Westminster in the United Kingdom.
Dracula is one of Penguins most famous and well known books that they have published onto paperback, some of their other famous books are, The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet.
Editorial publishing is one of the biggest types of publishing and thats purely because it consists of newspapers, magazines, zines and many other forms of editorial. Editorial can use a lot of illustration with in the products that they release so their are a lot of illustrators who go and work for editorial companies but the down side to working for one is that if it is a weekly issue you will need to illustrate a magazine, zine or other products in such a strict time schedule, illustrators such as Peter brookes who illustrate satire for new papers and because it is for a news paper he has a very strict deadline of a day or a few days to create an appealing piece of work that is presentable for the public.
Here is one of his pieces of satire and just from looking at it he has given it a lot of thought so it is offencive to the people depicted in the piece but not overly offencive to the extent where he can be taken to court or have his work removed from the news paper, the line work and colour used just shows how difficult it must be to achieve this standard of work when you are working in the editorial industry.
The publishing companys for childrens books are becoming larger and narrative illustrators are more on demand, whether they need to illustration general fiction, teenage fiction, non fiction and other types, and these demands are creating more illustrators and bigger names in print and digital work.

Professional Studies ( The Consumer )
In the world of illustration the term consumer represents the people who will purchase the products that you will create, the consumer can also be called a possible consumer and that stands for someone who is either looking or is interested in your product.
http://www.mycustomer.com/sites/default/files/styles/608x350/public/iStockphoto_Thinkstock_social_brain.jpg?itok=-kP1G8Z2
When you work in a industry were you have to create work to what the consumer wants it becomes something were its not what you want but something that fits the consumers requests, but some people are easily persuaded so you can hint towards what you would want to do and then they will agree, but sometimes the consumer has their mind fixated on the original idea. In today's illustration industry a lot of the consumers are looking for work that has been completely created digitally instead of being hand rendered first then put through digitally to make the piece look more presentable as the final product.
The consumer is the final outcome of a product, before the consumer even gets the product their are steps taken before the final piece is handed over, Whether it is for a children's book, Print or a digital piece everyone one of these will have at least 3+ steps to take before it is handed to the consumer.
Some illustrators and industry's focus their work at a certain type of consumer, Christopher Lovell is a good example of this.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-mDYAN_XeBr4/UxjYFj5aViI/AAAAAAAEYp4/Ip2FLiILSvU/w500-h739/tumblr_msznm1YWpD1r7f13do1_500.jpg
Nearly all of Chris's work is aimed at consumers who are into more of a Gothic out look on things, such as heavy metal bands, Gothic novels etc., their are a lot of different ways you can achieve a certain look to your illustration so it appeals to a certain type of consumer, most of the time it is through the line work and the image, but Chris has used the line work but the colour adds more depth and makes the image look darker and more Gothic then if it was just black and white, when focusing on making your work appealing to a Gothic audiences you need to start incorporating colours that are almost lifeless, such as pale creams, greys and colours that look a bit dirty such as moss greens, browns , yellows, just by using just a simple colour pallet you can change your target audience so easily.
When you create work for a consumer you have to make something that they want to buy so the main thing that you think of what you create a piece for someone is if the illustration appeals to the consumer, some consumers may give your a bland design which you may have to create but as a illustrator you should always try and make a bland piece something that not only does it make the person who asked you to create the design to like but it should make anyone who sees the design to like it aswell so not only does it stand out and achieve its purpose for what the consumer wanted it can also be a way to get noticed by future consumers for your work.
One of the main things you need to keep in mind when you are creating a illustration for someone is that it needs to be in the trend of illustration because most consumers wont want a old fashioned design where the new designs that are in the illustration market are all new and original, so you need to make sure that your work keeps in the trend so it doesn't fall behind the competition of all the other illustrators. You must also remember that you have to remember who your client is so you may have to add things that the clients likes where you don't like it, and don't include something that may be considered offensive by the consumer and doing this you may have to get rid of your own belief's and this goes for most of the illustrations that you will ever create.
The consumer market i have looked at is known as Shonen jump and this company is a magazine that produces a wide variety of different magazines whether it is

Professional Studies ( Exhibitions )
Exhibitions are a big part of a illustrators career, it gets your name known to possible future clients and it is a good way on meeting other illustrators who you could make more connections through, it is also a good way on selling your products. The main thing you need to keep in mind when you host an exhibition is originality of the advertisement and the exhibition its self, because if it doesn't look original and interesting people not just from the creative industry but people from all types of work wont consider coming and that you losing less people who could be future consumers of your products.
Inky goodness are a large company who curate exhibitions and host exhibitions for the creative industry's, and their goal is helping new talent in the creative industry to get
noticed. http://inkygoodness.com/
Festivals for illustration and other industry's are a good way to present your work at a stall or creating a piece of work onto a wall so its more unique. The difference between a festival and a exhibition is that with a festival it doesn't just try and get one persons work noticed but it aims to get everyone's work noticed through their work being sold from stalls, their is a festival of illustration happening at Hartlepool and it is a good way for the students to get noticed by people who have already made a living in the illustration industry.

The most notice way on having your work is by doing a outdoor wall illustration, that is were you create a illustration onto a buildings side, with the counsels permission of course, and you can put your contact details somewhere on the image or hint your logo in the illustration so it all works together.

Proffessional Studies ( Copyright )
Copyright is given to someone who originally created a product, whether it is a illustration or a film if someone and copyright gives the original creator the right to re produce the product or sell it off where if someone who tried to re produce that product they would be committing copyright, the most common case of copyright is the name of products, you find products such as cereals that taste the same but have a separate name and that is because by law they had to change their names or they would be committing copyright.
http://www.copyrightauthority.com/copyright-symbol/Copyright-Symbol-images/Copyright_symbol_9.gif
Above is the copyright symbol, anything that has this symbol on it is copyrighted and if that product is re produced it is classed as committing copyright.
Intellectual property is were when someone creates a piece of creative work it is automatic classed as copyright and this goes whether it is a physical product, on a piece of paper or if it is digital it will still be classed as copyrighted.
Their is a difference between a trademark and something that is copyrighted, best way for me to describe copyright is if someone has created a illustration and someone is using your illustration to go on t shirts without your authorization, were trade marking could be a logo, name of a company etc, a trade mark is anything that can be related to a certain organisations, company's or groups.
http://www.mycustomer.com/sites/default/files/images/Coca_Cola03.jpg
Some people believe that it is copyright if someone has the same idea which is confusing because that is saying that if someone wants to create a illustration of a goblin and then you do it first that person is copyrighting you, when in actually fact its just a idea, it would only be copyright if someone used your illustration to their own personal benefit and it would be classed as plagiarism is someone used your work at passed it off as your own.
When you create a product it is automatic classed a copyright and you get all the rights to that product so it is illegal for anyone else to use that product without your authorization.

Primark is one of the biggest contenders in England for copyright and plagiarism and they are frequently being taken to court for stealing designs of clothes from other shops and the images that they put onto their clothing.
http://www.out-law.com/page-5577
Task
One way on making your work yours is by watermarking it so that if someone trys to the steal the image digitally it will stop them and if they try to print the product onto say a t shirt it will prove that they have plagiarised and copyrighted your work.
Registering your work is another way to help copyright your work other then it being copyrighted automatic, when you register your work onto a website it keeps key details and information that your work has so if it does come to the time where your work is being copyrighted you can go back to the registration and you have the proof that it is your work.
Copyright can affect everyone not just in the creative industry but anyone who works in a industry which you need to create a final product, one of the biggest ways that it can affect you is through you losing money, by law a company or organisation uses your product and doesn't inform you or get your authorization you can take them to court for copyright because they will be making profit from your product and you will be making nothing.

Professional Studies ( The Truth Is Out There )
When someone gets their degree from what ever course they are studying the biggest question they are asked in their life is what do you want to be, so before you leave your course you need to know what opportunities their are for you to take that is related to the subject that you have spent the past 3 years at university to study for. When you leave the university you need to create your portfolio so that no matter what the job may be you will be able to stand a chance against the rest of the competition, whether it is for a advertisement company or a teacher.
If you want to be in a specific job you will need to adjust the way you work and the style you work in so it fits in the the potential company or clients you will work for, so you need to know how to adjust your self to the ideal job you are going for, because you don't want to create your own on take of the Mona Lisa and have it used as a advertisement for a tooth brush, you would want it as a influence for a magazine or a image used on clothing.
When creating the product you need to make it ideal for the company, so if you made a chair for a company you wouldn't make the chair difficult to sit in or impossible to sit in because that will lose your market audience.
http://www.iroonie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/soccer-leather-chair-designs.jpg
The person who created this chair had aimed the target market at male children who like football, and with making it a football it has made the chair more desirable to someone who likes football then someone who just things the sport is ok.
This is a illustration from one of my favourite illustrations, Dan Mumford and he created his work for a specific audience and that audience is more of a horror, dark appeal. The fact he focuses his work on looking more dark and gothic then some other illustrators it opens up different directions for his work to go in such as heavy metal cd covers, rock magazines and horror movies.
If you dont suceed in becoming a illustrator you gain transferable skills that you gained through your studys as wanting to become a illustrator, some of the skills that i can think of that you can use are skills such as, a sharp eye for detail and patients.
When I leave university and get my degree their are jobs such as teacher, freelance illustrator, advertiser, games designer, comic book artist, manga artist, interior designer, fashion illustrator, satire illustrator and many more.

Professional Studies ( What is happening now? - What is happening in your region? )
