Professional Studies ( The Consumer )

In the world of illustration the term consumer represents the people who will purchase the products that you will create, the consumer can also be called a possible consumer and that stands for someone who is either looking or is interested in your product.

When you work in a industry were you have to create work to what the consumer wants it becomes something were its not what you want but something that fits the consumers requests, but some people are easily persuaded so you can hint towards what you would want to do and then they will agree, but sometimes the consumer has their mind fixated on the original idea. In today's illustration industry a lot of the consumers are looking for work that has been completely created digitally instead of being hand rendered first then put through digitally to make the piece look more presentable as the final product.

The consumer is the final outcome of a product, before the consumer even gets the product their are steps taken before the final piece is handed over, Whether it is for a children's book, Print or a digital piece everyone one of these will have at least 3+ steps to take before it is handed to the consumer.

Some illustrators and industry's focus their work at a certain type of consumer, Christopher Lovell is a good example of this.

Nearly all of Chris's work is aimed at consumers who are into more of a Gothic out look on things, such as heavy metal bands, Gothic novels etc., their are a lot of different ways you can achieve a certain look to your illustration so it appeals to a certain type of consumer, most of the time it is through the line work and the image, but Chris has used the line work but the colour adds more depth and makes the image look darker and more Gothic then if it was just black and white, when focusing on making your work appealing to a Gothic audiences you need to start incorporating colours that are almost lifeless, such as pale creams, greys and colours that look a bit dirty such as moss greens, browns , yellows, just by using just a simple colour pallet you can change your target audience so easily.

When you create work for a consumer you have to make something that they want to buy so the main thing that you think of what you create a piece for someone is if the illustration appeals to the consumer, some consumers may give your a bland design which you may have to create but as a illustrator you should always try and make a bland piece something that not only does it make the person who asked you to create the design to like but it should make anyone who sees the design to like it aswell so not only does it stand out and achieve its purpose for what the consumer wanted it can also be a way to get noticed by future consumers for your work.

One of the main things you need to keep in mind when you are creating a illustration for someone is that it needs to be in the trend of illustration because most consumers wont want a old fashioned design where the new designs that are in the illustration market are all new and original, so you need to make sure that your work keeps in the trend so it doesn't fall behind the competition of all the other illustrators. You must also remember that you have to remember who your client is so you may have to add things that the clients likes where you don't like it, and don't include something that may be considered offensive by the consumer and doing this you may have to get rid of your own belief's and this goes for most of the illustrations that you will ever create.

The consumer market i have looked at is known as Shonen jump and this company is a magazine that produces a wide variety of different magazines whether it is
